Question

Has the second portion of Friday Congregation Sermon to be in Arabic or can it be said in English or any other language? I ask this because in Atlanta USA some new Mufti’s say your Friday Prayer is not complete if the second portion of the sermon is said in a language other than Arabic.

Answer

Mr Ghamidi believes that the problem you are confronting is because of the Hanafi understanding about Friday Sermon. Their opinion is that it should all be in Arabic. The rest understand that the sermon is meant to deliver a message to the participants and therefore it should be in the language they understand.

There is no problem whatsoever in delivering sermon in English or any other language. Even the prayers in the sermon can be in a language other than Arabic. In Malysia, which is a predominantly Shaf’i country with state-controlled Masajid, the sermon is in the local language. Only the prayer for the king is in Arabic. That too is because of their tradition.

Including Civil Services Academy, Administrative Staff College and PAF War College.
