Why do we say in salah the following as if the Apostle (pbuh) is alive and present with us?
“All compliments, all physical prayer and all monetary worship are for Allah. Peace be upon you, Oh Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Peace be on us and on all righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that no one is worthy of worship except Allah And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.” Why and how does it make sense? Why do we start talking to the Apostle while praying to Allah? Is prayer not supposed to be addressed to Allah?
Answer
The supplication in the tashahhud usually recited in the prayer is ascribed to the Prophet (sws). He taught this to the Companions. It does not necessarily imply that he is present among us alive. This is a form of expression in Arabic which is used for effect. It expresses force and direct communication of our intentions for the Prophet of Islam.
