Do mentally handicapped people need to give zakah?
Answer
Zakah is a form of Worship and like all other obligations, it is something which is incumbent upon people who can comprehend and discharge their duties while being aware of them. Thus, according to our understanding of Islam, every sane person is obliged to pay Zakah on the assets he owns.
If an individual does not have the sense of a duty and cannot understand the meaning and importance of religion and religious obligation he is not obliged to perform any obligations.
