Question
Can anyone please clarify the position of a country having an armaments industry. Does the Qur’an allow building the industry?
Answer
None can say that a country producing armament is committing haram. Everyone has the right to develop their defense and enable them to war any oppressor country. However, weapons of mass destruction go beyond this purpose and should never be built. Islam does not allow us to kill innocent lives even during the war. This shows that we should not engage is anything which has the potential to be used wrongly and which causes more harm to the massed then to the military forces even during the war. Thus building such industry would be against all moral and religious obligations.
