Question
I am writing to ask you if you know Sheikhs that allow Muslim women marry Christian men. I understand that the majority opinion does not accept these unions but I also know there is controversy about this question, and I have read many reports of scholars coming out and saying that the question is not clear because it is not specified as Ḥarām in the Koran. Please kindly give me guidance about this question as it is very important to me.
Answer
According to my teacher, Mr. Javed Ahmad Ghamidi, Muslim women are not allowed to marry non-Muslim men. This is because the Qur’ān has allowed marriage of Muslim men with women of Ahl al-Kitab but has not allowed the other way round. The main reason for this seems to be the general dominance of the husband over his family. It is usually expected that the whole family will be under the influence of the man who is the head of the family.
