Question
A friend of mine was asked about his marital status by some of his friends and, in spite of being married, he told them that he is single. Now he has recently read on some Islamic website that doing so renders nikah null and void. I have already given him my opinion in this regard but he wants an expert opinion. Can you please shed some light on this issue?
Answer
I am sorry I cannot comment on the view that this act renders the nikah null and void because I do not know the arguments they have offered in support of the judgment. I understand that it does not affect the nikah. This is because it does not include the conventional ways of severing marriage ties. The man can at best be charged with concealing the truth and lying. It does not affect his marriage in any way.
