Effect of Apostasy on Nikah

Question:

Hello,

I have a very important question for Javed Ahmed Ghamdi. I have heard that if someone commits apostasy, their marriage (nikkah) is annulled. If a Muslim commits apostasy or blasphemy, God forbid, but then repents and returns to Islam, what happens to their marriage? Does this law apply differently based on whether the marriage has been consummated or not? Please reply!

Thank you!

Answer:

Salaam,

In Ustaz Ghamidi’s view, the marriage is not automatically annulled in any way unless a proper divorce is given. If a Muslim makes blasphemous remarks or expresses doubts about Islam, we should engage with them and try to provide correct and satisfactory answers. Meanwhile, the marriage remains unaffected. If the person returns to Islam, the marriage remains intact. This is also true for marriages that have not yet been consummated.

Regards,
