Giving Children French Name

Question

Can we name a Muslim child by name with Islamic spirit but in French language form e.g elsa meaning blessed by Allah?

Answer

Naming children is not the subject of the religion. It is the common practice of Muslims only to give their children names which are common in the Muslim society. Sometimes people even prefer their local culture in this regard and their practice has never been disapproved. Therefore there is nothing wrong with naming children in the proposed way. Only thing that is important is that one should not give his offspring such names as to reflect the negation of the Islamic beliefs for example naming after a deity.
