Question
My question is regarding hypnotherapy. I have seen (online) the following reasons for it to be “haram”: a) use of jinns b) giving up your will and c) not relying on the help of Allah Almighty. However, I disagree with b) and c). I am not sure about a). This is something I do not know enough about. The definition of hypnotherapy is usually as such: “Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis in psychotherapy. It is used by licensed physicians, psychologists, and others. Physicians and psychiatrists may use hypnosis to treat depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sleep disorders, compulsive gaming, while certified hypnotherapists who are not physicians or psychologists often treat smoking and weight management.” I am currently considering going to this hypnotherapist for help with my self-esteem/confidence.
Answer
We believe that there is nothing wrong with hypnotherapy. It does not involve jinn nor does it mean not relying on Allah. If this is true then every step we take for cure and any other means for that matter would come under this attack. When we let a doctor operate on our heart we give up our body to them and, according to this view, give up reliance in Allah.
