Marrying A Woman Of Different Religion Denomination

Question

I have a very personnel question regarding my marriage. I have promised a girl to marry her but her family members are very irrational (personal opinion) orthodox bralevi. On the other hand my family members are relatively rationale. My brother says that the girl must have the same belief as their parents. Till then I should not go ahead with this relation. Today I am in an ambivalent condition. If I get married to her I will lose the basic tradition of my family and its belief and of course it will set not a very good example for the next generation. On the other hand, if I withdraw from it I myself consider it very immoral and this will affect the life of the girl more than it can affect mine. Please guide me.

Answer

Before marriage it is essential that one should consider the cultural, religious and social circumstances of one’s spouse and her family as well. This is necessary for a harmonious marriage. You should assess your proposed spouse and her family with reference to these circumstances and then take a decision.

Of course abiding by one’s promise is very essential as well. However, in the situation you are in, you should give priority to what has been said earlier. If you have to break your promise, then it is perhaps a lesser commitment you have to break and in this case you should apologize to that lady and also give the atonement for breaking an oath mentioned in the Qur’an (5:89).
