Naming Children

Question

We named our three year old son Moiz. Is it allowable for the believers to name their children after an attributive name of God in this form? Some people say that if we have to use any of the names of God we need to add something like Abdul Moiz, Abdullah etc.

Answer

Moiz is one of God’s attributive names. There are attributes of God which are also used of the humans. For example God is merciful and a human being can also be characterized by the trail of mercifulness. When we call someone by such a name that can be attributed to God as well as His servants among humans we do not mean to equate the person named such with God. Therefore there is nothing wrong in naming children like Moiz Ahmad, Moiz Amjad etc.
