Purification For Prayer

Question

I have got IUD (intra-uterine device) which causes intermittent bleeding for anywhere between 3- 6 months to settle in. As this is not the monthly bleeding, a couple of people said that if you bleed for any other reason, in Islam, it is then considered an illness. You can start to pray and recire Qur’an. Is this view in line with the Qur’an and the Prophetic teachings?

Answer

We believe what you have been told is correct. It is only the menstrual and puerperal bleeding that requires the women to stop praying. Your issue is clearly different. You should therefore make wudu and start praying. Even the bleeding continues during the prayer that is acceptable for it is not in your control. Similarly you are not required to take a bath after every instance of bleeding. Simple wudu is sufficient.
