Qur’an And Science

Question

What is the confluence of Qur’an and science? For example again and again the Qur’an claims the heart to be the seat of decisions, whilst science has held the brain is responsible. Likewise, the Qur’an and Hadith refer to the seven heavens, whilst scientific proof contradicts it? Please elaborate.

Answer

Scientific research has established the roles of different organs of the body and it has proved the brain to be the centre of human thought. Similarly, it has been established that the heart is not related to the thought process.

The Qur’an is a literary work, as opposed to a scientific one. It uses literary metaphors and addresses the hearts. Hence the use of the word “heart” as a seat of thought. As I have used the word heart here, in spite being aware of the realities of the mind and the heart. This metaphor is common to a lot of languages. As we usually say “that my heart is not in it.”
However, Qur’an does point to the centre of the human soul. Human thought is one faculty, based in the brain, human personality is another. Where is the centre of this invisible human expression in perpetual evolution? Physically defining personality is beyond the realm of science and myself. According to the hints in the Qur’an, it is the heart.
