Question
I have read the following statement in a monthly journel ‘ishrāq’: “Allah Almighty has created this set up in a manner that every human being depends on the other human being.” On the other hand, all mankind pray that they not become dependent on others. Is this prayer not reasonable?
Answer
There is nothing wrong with this prayer. We also pray to God that He not make us destitute to others. Amen. The dependence mentioned in the quotation is different from the one we pray to survive. We pray for our health and sustenance. We pray for health so that we could complete all the assignments before death and we do not become dependent on any of our relatives. We pray for our sustenance so that we do not need to ask even our children for help. In the above quotation, dependence implicates that to run the economy of the world both the people who invest and arrange it and those who work under them are needed. Thus, different people perform different actions to help the economy move. In short, for this kind of services, the terms muhtāj and muhtāj ilayh have been used.
