Can Zakah be used to build a Masjid?

Assalamualaikum,

Can we use Zakah money for building a new Masjid?

Answer

Wa alaikumussalaam

In our opinion, Zakah can be used for any good purpose, even the building of a Masjid. The Qur’an (9:60) has stipulated the heads on which Zakah can be used and one of them is فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ (fi sabilillah): This includes all expenses for serving Islam and for the welfare of the people.
