Question
Also, living abroad, is it preferable for Muslim to be buried in only a Muslim graveyard or does it not matter that non-Muslims are also buried there?
Answer
Muslims practice of burying the dead involves keeping the direction to the Ka’bah. It is also natural for the believers to like to be buried among co-religionists. Other Muslims visit the graveyard and pray for their fellow believers. These things make it desirable that the believers are buried in separate graveyard. However, this is not obligatory and the Sharia’h has not prohibited burying the dead believers in a non-Muslim graveyard. Therefore, a family living among the non-Muslims can bury their dead among the community graveyard if there is no separate space available to them.
