Sūrah 72
Sūrah al-Jinn
This sūrah forms a pair with Sūrah Nūḥ; the introduction covering both is on that page.
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Ever-Merciful.
Tell them [O Prophet]: “It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn listened to it, then [went] to their people and said: ‘We have heard a wondrous Qur’ān, which shows guidance to the right path; so, we have professed faith in it, and now we will never associate anyone with our Lord.’ And also that: ‘Exalted is the majesty of our Lord; He has neither taken a wife for Himself nor children.’ And also that: ‘This foolish [leader] of ours used to utter absolutely false things about God.’ And also that: [‘We followed him before this only because] we believed that no man or jinn could forge a lie against God.’ And also that: ‘[Human beings were already a little rebellious; then] some foolish ones among human beings had been seeking refuge with some mischievous among these jinn of ours; so, they only increased their rebellion.’ And also that: ‘Like you, they also thought that God would never raise [to life] anyone [after death].’ And also that: [‘Before listening to this Qur’ān, we were in a quest because] when we groped our way through the heavens, we found that it is filled with stern guards, and meteors are being unleashed in it.’ And also that: ‘Previously we were able to sit in some of its stations to eavesdrop, but now [we see that] whoever tries to eavesdrop finds a darting flame in wait for him.’ And also that: ‘[At that time,] we did not know whether ill was intended for those on the earth or whether their Lord has intended something good for them.’ And also that: ‘There have remained amongst us the righteous and also those who are otherwise [and before this also] our paths had been separate.’ And also that: ‘[We were never rebellious;] we understood that we cannot escape God in this earth nor defeat Him by fleeing anywhere in the heavens.’ And also that: ‘[On the basis of this notion We had that] when we heard this word of guidance, we have believed in it. So, [we now also call upon you that those among you] who will believe in their Lord will have no fear of any loss or injustice.’ And also that: ‘[Now after this,] there will be those among us who will submit to the truth and those also who will insist on their disobedience. So, those who submitted, found themselves on the right path, and those who showed defiance, they then only became the firewood of Hell.’”
And [tell them O Prophet that] it has also been revealed to me that if the people of your nation had adhered to the straight path of tawḥīd, We would have bestowed on them rain in abundance so that We could test them by this means. And [it is Our decree that] those [among them] who turn away from the Reminder of their Lord, He will put them through an ever-increasing torment. And also that mosques are only for God; so, invoke not anyone in them besides God. And also that when this servant of God stands [before Him in His house] to invoke [only] Him, it seems as if they will rush upon him. Say [O Prophet]: I invoke God only and will worship none besides Him. Tell them: I have no authority to harm or benefit you or to guide or mislead you. Say: [If I associate someone with Him, I very well know that] none can protect me from God nor can I find any refuge besides Him. [No, O People! I have no such authority for you;] my only duty is to inform you from God and to communicate His messages to you. However, [bear in mind that] those who disobey God and His Messenger, for them then is the fire of Hell wherein they shall abide forever. Until at last, when these people [inebriated with their might and power] behold there what they are being warned of, then at that time they shall surely know whose help is weaker and who are fewer in number. Say: I do not know whether the punishment with which you are being threatened is imminent or whether My Lord will postpone it a little more. [These are matters of the Unseen, and] only He knows this Unseen, and He also never reveals this Unseen to anyone. As for those whom He chooses as His messengers, they can say nothing of their own; He guards them from behind and from the front so that He may know whether they have delivered the messages of their Lord; and He surrounds whatever is around them and keeps count of all their things.
