Sūrah 88

Sūrah al-Ghāshīyah

Makkan · 26 verses · 4 passages · paired with Sūrah al-Ā‘lā

This sūrah forms a pair with Sūrah al-Ā‘lā; the introduction covering both is on that page.

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Ever-Merciful.

Has the news of that great calamity reached you which will overspread [the whole world]? How many a face on that day will be downcast, exhausted, worn out. They will enter the blazing fire. They will be given to drink from a seething spring. Their only food will be thorny dry grass, which will neither nourish them nor satisfy their hunger.

On the other hand, how many a face on that day will be radiant, pleased with their endeavours, in a lofty garden. They will not hear any indecent talk there. In it will be a running spring, high thrones set out, goblets nicely set forth, carpets well-arranged and cushions spread all over.

[If they do not believe,] then do they not see the camels – how they have been made? And not behold the sky – how it has been raised high? And not look at the mountains – how they have been set firm? And not see the earth – how it has been spread out.

If they do not believe in spite of this, then just remind them [O Prophet]! You are one who only reminds; you are not to force them. [Those who believe will definitely believe.] As for those who turn away and deny, God will inflict on them the great punishment. Surely to Us they have to return. Then it is upon Us also to call them to account.
