This sūrah forms a pair with Sūrah al-Muṭaffifīn; the introduction covering both is on that page.

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Ever-Merciful.

When the sky is rent asunder, and obeys its Lord’s command and this precisely is befitting for it. And when the earth is stretched out and casts out everything within it to become empty and obeys its Lord and this is what it must do. That will be the day of meeting your Lord.

[For that very day] O Human Being! You also are toiling on towards your Lord and are surely going to meet Him. Then he whose record is given to him there in his right hand will receive a very easy reckoning, and he will come back to his people rejoicing. And he whose record is given from behind his back [into his tied up hands] will soon call for death and will enter Hell. He remained engrossed among his kinfolk. He thought that he would never have to return anywhere. Yes, why not! He shall certainly return back because His Lord was ever watching over him.

Therefore, this is not so. I present as witness the glow of the sunset, and the night and the way it gathers, and the moon when it grows full that you also shall necessarily ascend gradually [to appear before your Lord] in a similar manner.

So, what has come over them that they do not believe, and when the Qur’ān is recited before them, they do not bow down [acknowledging its majesty]! In fact, [strangely enough] these disbelievers, on the contrary, are denying; yet God knows full well what they are accumulating. So, [O Prophet!] Give them glad tidings of a painful doom. For those, however, there is an eternal reward there who believed and have done righteous deeds.
